Verizon teams up with Sequans to fast-track commercial deployments of IoT connected devices

Verizon has announced the launch of two Verizon-certified LTE-M products ‘Monarch Go’ and ‘Monarch GPS’ – for firms that are looking to fast-track commercial deployments of IoT connected devices.

The operator says it has now become the world’s first carrier to certify these Sequans all-in-one modem components. Both products come with optional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Bluetooth capabilities.

Georges Karam, Sequans CEO said: “Monarch Go, on Verizon’s LTE network coupled with ThingSpace IoT platform allows for easy connection to cloud services from third parties.

“We believe that this is going to be a game changer for the industry,” Karam added.

Earlier this week, fifth-ranked carrier US Cellular launched its LTE-M network on more than 90% of its cell sites across the country – with an aim to have them 100% covered by the end of Q2/2020. The network is suitable for IoT solutions like fleet and asset management, smart meters, tank monitoring and other applications due to LPWAN, which plays an important role in offering extended coverage at a cheaper cost.

This time last year, Verizon successfully experimented with halving 5G latency by making use of edge computing. Engineers from Verizon installed Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC) equipment and MEC platform software into a network facility closer to the network edge. To conduct this test, Verizon made use of a facial recognition application. The trial was conducted at Verizon’s 5G testbed in Houston, Texas.
